As we are nearing the end of the year, it is time to reflect on what I have learned over throughout the course of the year. This year in statistics class I had the opportunity to broaden my background in mathematics and gain a larger understanding of the concepts in stats and how to apply them in different situations. This class will continue to be helpful for me because the concepts and different equations are used in many everyday situations ranging from the weather to the shots that you are going to get at your next doctor's visit. This class has opened my eyes to just how often Statistics is used in everyday life and how useful it can be in many occupations and situations not just in sports and when you’re pulling cards out of a deck.
One of the most difficult things that I faced in stats class this year is how to stay on task during class. I usually am pretty good about staying busy during class in the beginning of the year, but as the year goes on and senioritis sets in, I find myself off task more and more. This turned into a struggle once track started and there was more days when I was excused early for meets. This meant that I had less time to work on my homework, ask questions, and take notes on new material. I became less and less motivated as the warm weather came and spring break and prom took my attention away from school. Thankfully, I worked through my lack of focus and finished the last quarter out smoothly.
Stats class seemed to be pretty comparable in layout to many of Mrs. Lewis’s other math classes. But, one thing that sticks out to me that was different in this particular class is the addition of projects every chapter. In other courses there was only homework, quiz, and test scores that were submitted into the grade book, but these projects provided a refreshing change in stats. These projects were weighted as heavily as the test scores, so they greatly affected your grade and often boosted your grade if you put in effort. These chapter projects were a very good way to study the material that we covered in that chapter and served as a great study tool.
Statistics and Probability has more of an impact on our lives than one might expect. This class has taught me that there are many applications that you might not even realize like in the medical world and in the warranties for appliances and electronics. Statistics and probabilities are also used when the lottery is organized and by casinos. Elements of statistics are often used in many different occupations and it will even be used in my major of business.
